Character History and Personality: Eli never really knew his father, Ian, but he certainly knew of him. His mother would tell him stories about his father, about the things he did. These weren't stories that ought to have been told to a child, but she said the words anyways. He was a man who wasn't afraid, she'd say. He didn't back down. He was so strong, she told him, and so passionate. Memories of him were his bedtime stories and his mother did a good job at painting the devil into a powerful figure to live up to for the young boy.
During the prime of his life, Ian had done well in securing a future for any children he might have had, and Elliot was certainly no exception to the rule. The company specialized in pharmaceutical research, and the boy was named head of the company, at least on paper. Reality saw a board running the show, pulling the strings, but the money went to him, to his mother, and both were quite comfortable in their lifestyle.
Eli attended only the best of schools, groomed by those at the top of the company to take his rightful place at the head once he came of age. But lessons and schooling couldn't erase the simple fact that Elliot was more like his father than anyone was comfortable with. Charming and good with words, Elliot had a way of grabbing the attention of those around him and holding onto it until he was through. He was the definition of a leader, of the sort that could and would take charge of a situation as it best suited him. Perhaps that's why at the age of eighteen, he finally took over as president and CEO of the firm.
Being in charge gave him access to all aspects of the company, everything that it was capable of. It also, unfortunately, gave him some of the tools he needed to entertain some of his darker pastimes. That, too, was something he seemed to have inherited from his father, though it was an aspect of himself that he worked hard to conceal from his mother. As in love as she might have been with his father, she knew that he was dangerous as well, and had she known how much he shared in common with him, it was hard to say what might have happened and what Elliot might have had to do.
So he became adept at hiding that part of himself, of the darker things he entertained himself with after leaving the office. There were women and men, dark rooms and locked doors. People whispered about the goings on of the Russell boy, but no one talked where he could hear it. Too many people had been transferred and never heard from again, and the fear as to what happened to them was enough to keep those lips sealed.
Elliot was twenty when the hotel grabbed hold of him and brought him to New York City in the Marvel door. The hotel was also kind enough to bring along his business, complete with the name of Aiimrss Research. My father came up with the name, Eli would answer in response to questions, and he simply left it at that. Most had learned by that point not to question the young man too much when it came to his father, and those that didn't soon found themselves transferred to new and better opportunities. Or at least that's what Eli would say.
The new city came with its own difficulties and challenges, but Elliot was never one to step back from such things. No, he pushed forward and the effort he expended saw him successful. Aiimrss Research was responsible for many cutting-edge drug treatments for everything from cancer to AIDS to even something as normal as the common cold and migraines. A Hope for the Future was the tagline of his company, and Elliot? He was proud.
But he still had his own personal desires that could not be ignored. His own secrets that he kept tight to his chest. For you see, there were people in the city disappearing without a trace. Not many, not enough to rouse suspicion at least, and those who did disappear were hardly the sort that would be easily missed. Homeless teenagers, drug addicts, prostitutes, those that were already forgotten by the city.
And Elliot, he was content. His darker desires were satiated and his company was doing well. But then more doors opened and his world grew in a way that he could only begin to imagine.
